About the Articles Module

This Module is an advanced version of DNN's Annoucements module.

Features:

  • Images: An image can be displayed for each article. Thumbnails are automatically generated based on a configrable MaxWidth parameter. Images can be aligned either Left, Right, Top, or Alternating.
  • Multisourcing- An Article can appear in multiple places within your site. You can choose whether to display only the articles created within the current module or display articles from any module and use a variety of criteria (Featured, Categories, Creation Date, ...) to determine which Articles are displayed.
  • Templates/Skinning- 5 standard templates are provided with the install and an unlimited number of additional templates can be added to allow you to display the Article List exactly how you want it.
  • Paging: Admins can set the number of articles to display per page and a paging control will automatically display.
  • Search: Users can search all articles in the portal
  • Archive: Users can view all articles by clicking on the More Articles... link. Alternatively a custom link can be input to display a particular page or subset of articles.
  • Syndication-RSS Feeds- Fully implements DNN's ISearchable interface enabling searching and rss feeds.
  • Categories: Integrates with Efficion's Categories Module to allow for filtering by category
  • Comments: You may specify whether registered and/or anonymous users may leave comments for an article.
  • Multiple Sort options- Will be able to specify sort by created date, modified date, or title.
  • Keywords- the keyword meta-tag can now be set on the details page for improved search engine optimization

This version contains several significant bug fixes, CAPTCHA for non-logged in comments, SEO enhancements, new options for templates, and a new way of handling CSS. I'll be writing up guidelines on styling the module through CSS prior to the release. I also hope to have quite a bit of additional "Help" information for the release.

There are known bugs in this release mostly relating to particular and less common settings. Click Read More to view known bugs and planned features.

(UPDATE: 4.0.7 had some bugs with Detail Template loading that have been fixed for 4.0.8)

It's been a bit since I posted 4.0.6 but I assure you I have not been idle. Since the release of 4.0.6, over 50 issues have been submitted, reviewed, and responded to, added to the ticket system, and/or fixed. At the time of this writing, there are 21 issues that need to be addressed before we reach beta status. I do plan on releasing 4.0.7 in the next couple days with a variety of fixes and improvements. I've still got a few more things I need to do before I can call this a beta but this release is really shaping up nicely. I am now using it on all my major sites and have done quite a lot of testing. But it will be a few more days before we get to code-freeze and the beta. Here's alpha 3 for those that can't wait.

If you get an error about an "Ambiguous" class definition when you install this, you need to delete the EfficionConsulting.Articles.dll from your bin directory. When I release the beta version, I'll be compiling the module into a DLL again or making both styles available.

Please report any bugs you find in the module to the right.

I spent a lot of time on the module this weekend. I've add the ability to link to (and upload) files for the Detail Type and fixed a variety of issues. There's still several more bugs and maybe another feature I need to knock out before we go to beta but I do hope to go to better this week. I'm now running the module on several of my live portals.

A new early alpha version of the Articles module, version 4.0, is now available. DO NOT USE THIS ON LIVE SITES, it needs lots of testing. I'll put together a summary of new features and fixes soon.

Efficion is hoping to release a beta version of version 3.3 of the Articles module sometime next week. We continue to add some great and highly requested features including: ability to play Flash Videos (same as Google and YouTube use), new detail display options, Detail Page templates, ability to specify a file for the Detail Type, support for URLTracking, Sorting by Article Title, improved Category integration, ability to specify roles that can view Article Details, and FriendlyURL support.

UPDATE: We are continuing to add additional features to version 3.3 at client request. We hope to release beta 1 of Articles 3.3 by Friday, Oct 30.

UPDATE (Nov. 9, 2006): Whoosh! There went another self-imposed deadline. But I am actively working on the module now and very excited about changes and new features. I'm adding Send To A Friend capability, I've made adding templates easier as now you can just drop them in the Articles/Templates directory, I've fixed some bugs, and I've got some other nice things planned. Don't worry, I still expect to release a beta soon. Hopefully within the next week or so.

An alpha of version 3.3 of the Articles module is now available. This version is not yet recommended for live sites as it hasn't yet received sufficient community testing. Features may change and additional features may be added.

New Features include:
-Option to display Detail on Same Page as listing so the other module will still display.
-Option to display Detail on a completely different page
-Detail Page templates- Allows for modifying the look of the details page.
