Feature Requests

Please post any feature requests in the comments section of this Article. I will compile and organize feature requests in the details section.

Current items on the Todo List:
Version 3.2.7
  • On the Settings page, Allow Anonymous should be hidden unless Enable Comments is checked.
  • On the Settings page, the Page dropdown should be hidden unless the More Articles checkbox is checked.

Version 3.3
  • Make it easier to add and modify custom templates
  • Improve the integration of Categories. Consider using LoadControl to load the Edit page to enable adding categories from Articles.
  • Make categories optional rather than required.
  • Add option to display article details on separate page (no other controls) or same page.
  • Consider Details Page Templates
  • Look at using URLTracking and the URL Control
  • Make both searches search the Details field.
  • Only let admins or creators edit an article

Future Versions:
  • Make it possible to view a list of categories and when a user clicks on a Category it will show all articles in that category.
  • Add option for, "Display Description on Details page".
  • Consider putting some of the Edit Article entries in an Advanced section to simplify article entry and/or allow admins to Hide features on the Edit Article page
  • Consider additional Meta-Tags (description, title) and put in separate optional section section
  • Add Import Announcements feature
  • Consider making search go to an individual item (details) rather than page with list
  • Improve Approval mechanism: add reject, e-mail notification, and a filter for viewing Articles awaiting approval.

It would be great to have the ability to moderate comments, as said by someone earlier it could get quite tricky not being able to vert or delete some comments.
Also the ability for an article to be edited by only the Author or an administrator would be great. That way you could have a number of Authors who each handle their own articles only.
Other than that it’s a great product, keep up the good work.

I'd love the ability to sort Articles by Title and to also have a custom sort order field.

I am using the module on a site that's about to go live. We have a small newsletter and I used the Articles to build archives, however I ran into a problem, I can't solve. The Title field seems to have a fixed number of characters. MY titles are long and sometimes I have to cut them so they fit...is there any way around that? Otherwise a great module.

Using the style of an image + text then the image is very close to the text. Would be nice to have this as a parameter. I fixed it by modifying the template:
[asp:Image ID="imgArticleImage" runat="server" vspace="5" hspace="15" /]

If the below features (content localization, search by category, date, author) are going to be implemented, then i'm willing to pay for this great module

I have noticed that the images when called by MakeThumbnail.aspx.vb get compressed.
It would be great to be able to bypass the MakeThumbnail.aspx.vb and just use the image as I upload it. If I use a Gif, MakeThumbnail distorts the image and makes it look blurry, even if no resize is required.

Or modify the MakeThumbnail so it doesn't alter images that are smaller than the max image size.

If there is a code hack to bypass the MakeThumbnail code please let me know.

Suggestion; Is it possible, for one of future versions, to add start/end date for Featured mark? It will be great if we could put article on one page, and choose when this article will show up on front page...

The articles module has been great so far! Thanks for all your hard work. How difficult would it be to add two features?
1. The ability to sort articles by the category listed on the right side.
2. To incorporate some tracking of them so when the user clicks the read more link it logs it and the next time they view the page that article doesn't display?

KITTI MUANJANJAM Says:

You don't have the option to link to File ( A File On Your Site )

Mladen Ivosevic Says:
5/4/2006 1:07:35 PM

Module is, of course, great and I appreciate very much your work. I would like just to give you two suggestions:
- In Article details under field Written by is shown name of person who last edited article, not the person who originally posted this article. In case that admin make any changes to article, data about original poster will be lost (because that’s data written in Article table under column UserID). It would be better to have separate Last updated by field…
- Comments can’t be edited or deleted by Admin. This could lead to unpleasant situation if you allowed unregistered members to comment articles…

Hi,
Great module I say...How about a couple of buttons on the details page, one for "print this article" and one for "email this article".
Thanks!

Bryan Hughes Says:

First the article module is great, tha being said one thing I would like to see is article rotation. For instance, I have the article module on a article page as the main article section. I also have the article module on the home page which display's only featured articles. It would be nice to have a random setting, where all featured articles rotate with each page load, or using AJAX and have them rotate at a set interval.

Hi, I have used the module for a while at www.rihk.net and it has been a sucess. Besides the obvious part of publishing artickles, one of the important features is the ability for users to submit comments - but I can not find a way to moderate, edit or even delete comments. If this is possible, I would lk\ike to know how - if its not, I think this is a "must" in the next version.

James Motley Says:

I would like to second or third the desire for the Read More link to also include the ability to link to a file within the portal (with the upload feature). You can put in a manual path to accomplish that using the external URL, but the average user wouldn't know how to do that. One more thing that I don't think anyone else has asked for is the ability to customize the "More Articles" link text. I could modify the ascx file, but then it would be that way for every instance of the module. Sometimes I'd like the link to read different things depending on the use of the module like "Archived Articles" and "Previous Topics" etc.
This module has come far and is very useful with the ablity to filter the categories, allowing me to create an article once and have it show up in a variety of places. One more - add a return link to the top AND bottom. Good job and thanks! This module is very useful!

John Henley Says:

You have the option to link to external content, text/html, etc. How about internal (portal) file ??

Will Sugg Says:

Howdy,
I like your module, thanks! I was wondering if you could have a check on or off for including 'details' when you go on to the article itself. It can be kindof redundant depending on what you have for details. Also, could you have an option for 'source' rather than just author? I am thinking when you post newspaper articles that it would be better with the newspaper the article is from rather than who added it to the site. Thanks, Will in Maine, USA

The next version will have Details Templates (like list templates) that will allow you to customize the display and choose what fields to display or not... In the meantime, you can edit the ArticleDetails.ascx page and set visible="false" or style="display:none;" for the Description.

The next version will also include a drop down that allows you to select Author... at this point, Author will have to Registered... but I'm getting more requests like yours... of course since it seems you are entering these for your authors, you could just include Source at the top of the Article and hide the Author on the ArticleDetails.ascx.

Hi
Great module, thanks.
Quick question - do you have a timeline for future releases? I really like what you have planned for 3.3 and don't want to install one version now only to hav to upgrade in a few weeks if a new one comes out. Some idea of what your plans are would be great.
Thanks
Tony

Will Young Says:

What I mean is... Allow the administrator to edit the author field. In our case the "Written by" would always be the administrator.

Will Young Says:

Our organization puts out several publications. It would be nice to have an "Author" field and a "Publication" field.

Bob Roberts Says:

Great module. I very much appreciate it!

Here's my suggestion:
In the standard Announcements module there's an option to upload a file and then have the 'details' link go to that file. I'd like to have something similar in the Articles module. At a minimum it would be helpful to have the same feature the Announcements module has. Ideally I'd like to have the option to upload a number of attachments (3 would suffice) and have links appear in the article details.

I have a question.

i use the article module and i think its great, although i wonder if its possible to display other modules at the same time as a article?

ex:
article story in "Contentpane" and for example the login module in the "Rightpane"

thank you

This seems like a pretty neat module and one that DNN core is sorely missing for providing multiuser announcement/article posting with "read more" functionality. The module instance cross posting functionality is nice as well.

I'd really like to see the Articles module contents index-able by the core DNN search instead of, or in addition to, the Articles module search so I can direct my users to a single search box for site contents.

Also, it appears when trying to use the default RichText formatter that the font/size and perhaps other controls get disabled when selecting a "Detail" type of "text/html". This under DNN 3.1.1.

I most appreciate this fine module. I do however could use (even more) features...
Some things I´d like to be added to the Articles Module:
* when using the ´search articles´ only articles that are within the range of categories that are displayed on the specific tab should be returned.
* add (a) security role(s) to an Article, when creating one. And in the display settings be able to only show articles to users with the appropriate roles.
* to be able to enter the creation date/time of an article, not only the publish dateto influence the order of display, or perhaps add a field display order to an article
* add an author field to an article (not neccesarely an registred user) which can be displayed in the templates
* have aa (optional) structured download button with which one can download a complete report in addition to the read more button.

Thanks,

Maarten

Some things I noticed:
-- the category lists on the edit article page need to be wider.
-- I'd like an option to display by categories, with the category listed at the top of each grouping.
-- I'd like an option to sort on Article Date descending(I think the current one defaults to ascending?)
- When the "none" button is selected for "detail" the edit still requires something in the detail box.
